High Desert Screamer
Mountain Bike Race
Saturday, September 27, 2008
The newly-developed High Desert Trail System is a series of loops on the
pristine mesas overlooking Gallup. The course is primarily single-track,
hard packed clay interspersed with slick rock, small climbs and technical
sections.
The High Desert Screamer now in its third year is a must for riders from anywhere
near the Four Corners. The race takes place on the wickedly fast and flowing
High Desert Trail System. This 23 mile network of hard packed, rolling singletrack
has gotten better every season since its inception in 2004 and is now in the kind
of condition that the hearty souls who built it dreamed of as they sweated under
the sun with shovels and picks in hand. You will rip through turns while spinning
the big gear you always wanted to and will only touch the brakes in the rarest
moments of duress. But this trail does bite back by way of three of the most
infamous words in the mountain biking lexicon: climbs, switchbacks, and loose
corners. By the time you get to the far side of the course you will realize
that while insanely fast at many points, the High Desert won't let you simply
coast along while taking in the scenery.
The High Desert Screamer is a part of the outstanding New Mexico Off Road
Series and will boast some of the top talent from the surrounding area so you
will be pushed. Come out and test yourself on this up and coming trail system.
Please see the Course Profile page on this site for more detailed descriptions
of each category's course. We'll see you in Gallup on Saturday, September 27, 2008 as long as you're
ready to keep your hands far away from those brake levers (pretend they're made
of kryptonite if you need any help completing this task.)
